Why we need radar satellites
The launch of the first Sentinel-1 satellite marks a new paradigm in Earth observation focusing on operational missions to support users for decades to come. This first satellite for Europe’s environmental monitoring Copernicus programme carries an advanced radar to image Earth’s surface no matter what the weather or if it is day or night. Olaf Trieschmann from the European Maritime Safety Agency talks about the need for radar satellites and how data from Sentinel-1 will be used to monitor oil spills and for maritime surveillance. ESA’s Josef Aschbacher talks about how the wide range of services offered through Copernicus will make a step change in the way we manage the environment.

What about downed air craft like the current missing Malaysian flight? Once they're all deployed will they assist in finding missing jetliners?
What about radiation in humans at the surface? just thinking …
I would think this could detect and give early warning for pirates approaching commercial ships.

This comes all the way from Uganda, Africa, one of the most traffic congested countries in the world (hope you all know the effects it pose) and i am a Transport professional/expert working for Transport, Travel & Logistics Research and Innovation (U) Ltd. We look ahead to investing in the Country -wide 27Hours road monitoring and surveillance system with either satellite or Radar system or the Radar-satellite system. The main objective of this is to be able to analyze high accident rates and it's causes and effects, congestion (Major causes and the magnitude of its effects), venture in vehicle and asset tracking and as well provide real-time footage to the commercial insurance dealers and individuals (Victims) to effect fair compensation unlike the current cheating, unfair and or even no compensation to the Victims due to lack of presentable evidence of the accident. W e highly need your technical advise and guidance on how best to go about this. We have singled out ESA for the Surveillance system

I wanna ask why satellite didn't use for discovering targets same as radar military . Is it use?
