In part 21 we head to Sicily. Syracuse was a thorn in Rome’s side that could not be ignored due to its strategic importance. It’s capture was a bitter blow for Hannibal, as Rome could redirect significant resources in manpower, ships, provisions, and commanders to other theaters. Hannibal would feel the brunt of this massive shift. Furthermore, the capture of Syracuse by Rome marked the end of the independence of Greek cities in southern Italy and Sicily.
Special thanks to David Feeney for graciously allowing us to use his paper “Hannibal’s Summer campaign of 213 BC”. This episode would not have been possible without him. Another Hannibal Video, so quick???
The land and sea battle at Sicily between Marcellus and Carthage should have happened. The Carthaginian commanders always engage when they shouldn't and never when they should. Sicily and Sardinia totally could have been Carthaginian victories, but the punic commanders outside of Hannibal couldn't make a single good decision if their life depended on it.
Whoooo!
Well done! Can't wait for the next one.
Can’t believe you didn’t mention the part during the battle in the bay when a dragon with propellers flew in and fired strange metal projectiles down at the Romans on the ships before being shot down and crashing outside the city. (For those who have no idea what I’m talking about, this is a movie reference. If you know, you know.) 😉
Thank you. So interesting every time.
very cool
i weep for Syracuse
For the first time, an ad in a History video on YouTube appeals to me.. Wishlisted!
The owner of the channel deserves a 🫂 hug , back to back Hannibal episode, thank u so much
I think the Carthaginian generals outside of Hannibal are extremely underrated. Each general has pros and cons, and most of the Carthaginian generals only lost because of unfavorable circumstances. For example, himilco failed to lift the siege of Syracuse because his army got sick, mago’s troops unexpectedly routed, hasdrubal’s scouts betrayed him, etc.
I don't have a PC but that game looks sick! If the devs see this, any thoughts on bringing it to console?
