Sorry Steve but I used to do this with my cups when I was a kid so I know how it ACTUALLY works, you don't need a certain amount of salt in your water it's about the pressure in the straw because you are holding it with your thumb it causes a seal and when you dip the straw a certain distance in the cup and let go the water shoots up into the straw to the point of how far it's dipped in, put your thumb back on make a seal again take it out put it back in but deeper and repeat the process and it will shoot up, if you do it with different cups with different colors then you can get this affect in your straw no salt needed
