Battle of Pressburg, 907: https://youtu.be/VHUSCs4Nacg

📚 After defeating an East Francian army at Pressburg in 907, the Magyars ravage Swabia, Bavaria, and Thuringia, obliging German princes to buy them off or incorporate them into their armies. But when a brave duke in Bavaria ambushes a Magyar army in 909, he shows that they can be defeated. This stirs the 17-year-old king Louis the Child into action. No more tribute is to be paid to the nomads and a military campaign is mounted to not only drive the Magyars out of East Francia, but out of Europe as well…

  1. By the way, you said that King Louis reigned in east Francia for mode than a decade at 5:11, but later on in the video I believe you said he died at 18, the battle of Lechfeld causing him to lose spirit. Other than this minor discrepency, great video, near perfection.

  2. Wow, I had no idea that the poor Germans were facing such coward “warriors” , more like shooters.
I thought only the Iberians were facing souless savages from the east that the northeastern European Kingdoms had a better time, but no, for a moment, the Empire of East Frankia had no army at all!

  3. This is just another instance of pure incompetence on the part of the European nobility. Basic common sense would suggest not to engage the Magyars in the first place at that location, as with their maneuverability and speed advantage, they would basically always be able to dictate the flow of battle. If they wanted to run, they could always do so, so they'd never have the motivation to stand and fight unless forced to or if the circumstances favored them (in which case you would NOT want to be fighting them). Even if there wasn't an ambushing force waiting for them, what was the end game for the Germans? They couldn't really catch them, so the Magyars could have just kept leading them on indefinitely (at least til their horses got tired enough that they decide to disengage completely, then they'd just return later to do it again). No plan, no sense, just a useless waste of lives.

  4. As always, even today, Europeans are extremely slow to act and if they act at all, unity is very difficult to achieve. Each king, prime minister or president of each little country wants to act and be considered like he were ruling over an international superpower. People are crazy. The lack of unity is exploited by one and all for the last 2200 years. Mafia bosses, drug lords, Putin, Xi, Trump, they all laugh themselves silly for so much disunity. And the latter socipoaths actively promote lies to create more disunity.
