This image was taken in October 2024 by Mars Express’s High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC).

It shows Deuteronilus Cavus, a large depression about 120 km wide. Its round shape suggests that it first formed as an impact crater. Over a long time, water and ice eroded the crater, slowly changing its shape and making it almost twice as big as it was at the beginning.

  1. The description of Deuteronilus Cavus highlights how impact craters on Mars are not static features but evolve significantly over time. The original round depression, created by a massive impact, likely resembled other fresh craters seen across Mars. However, the presence of water and ice in this region of the northern lowlands led to long-term erosion, slumping, and widening of the crater’s walls. This process explains why the cavity is now almost double its initial size—liquid water in the past and glacial activity later on gradually reshaped the terrain. Deuteronilus Cavus sits at the boundary between the smooth northern lowlands and the older southern highlands, an area known for evidence of buried ice and glacial flow. That makes this image especially important, not only for understanding the geologic history of Mars, but also for studying how water once cycled across the planet.
