ESA’s newest astronaut: Matthias Maurer
German citizen, Matthias Maurer, officially graduated as an ESA astronaut on Tuesday 25 September 2018 at the European Astronaut Centre in Cologne, Germany. Having completed basic and pre-assignment training, he is now qualified to go to space.
From in the classroom to underwater, across Europe, China and beyond, this clip showcases a few highlights from a challenging and rewarding three-year programme.

Meine herzlichsten Glückwünsche und viel Erfolg für ihre künftige Mission! Ich bleibe sehr gespannt weiter von ihnen zu lesen und zu hören. Ihr Kollege Alexander Gerst hat ja mit seiner sekundären Arbeit, die Gesellschaft für unseren MUTTER 🌎 und ihre Arbeit zu sensibilisieren, ein sehr großes öffentliches und zuvor noch nicht da gewesenes Interesse ausgelöst! Es macht ihn so unglaublich sympathisch da man zu jedem Zeitpunkt merkt das es ihm von Herzen wichtig ist und er dafür brennt, was er tut. Ich bin von daher schon gespannt und wünsche mir zugleich, dass auch sie uns mitnehmen und ihre Arbeit und Erlebnisse mit uns teilen und damit ganz viele Menschen erreichen!
