Romans worst enemies had always been romas, they lost manzikert and anatolia by themselves
Roman resilience is a real thing. Whilst the Seljuks didn't break the Byzantine Empire, they did cripple it tremendously. Same for the Rashidun Caliphate and Fourth Crusade, but the Ottomans finished the job.

There was a civil war that toppled Romanos Diogenes and left Byzantium in anarchy. Afterwards the Komnenian Dynasty managed to retake most of Anatolia, especially the exterior, but were followed by the incapable Angelos Dynasty, which basically caused the 4th Crusade. Before that, Byzantium was on its way to retake Anatolia
