The battle is for the supplies. They should have kept their gaze focused on the goal and progressed with a siege mentality crossing the river to the East and building a fort on the Eastern hill. Keeping their minds focused on defensive counter cavalry measures while slowly moving forward to seize the supplies Hannibal is relying on for his existence. Hannibal is vastly over extended and perched on the edge of a cliff. Siege of Cannae not Battle of Cannae would deliver Roman victory. Hannibal cannot leave the supplies to prevent the strangulation of his position while staying to defend is submitting to that slow strangulation.
