Next year ESA astronaut Alexander Gerst from Germany will make his second flight to the International Space Station. At NASA’s Johnson Space Centre in Houston, Texas, he has been testing the food that has been developed for his mission – and, using the experience of his previous long-duration stay in orbit, helping nutritionists to decide what he will be eating in space.

  1. Why does the tasting have to take place all in one sitting? Astronauts must be given time to really appreciate the variety otherwise it wouldn't be so appealing after about 15-20 different meals.
