  1. Those 'roofs of housing projects in red and blue' are actually semi-derelict temporary housing erected for incredibly low-wage construction workers to live in. They house the people who build those gigantic skyscrapers (why else would 'housing projects' be placed next to the ritzy financial/business center of Shanghai?), who are forced to live there because they can't afford to rent or own an apartment in the city in which they're working.

    While living in these temporary dorms, workers save an abysmally low amount of money to send home to their families, who likely live in poorer rural communities where work is scarce. Eventually, these temporary 'housing projects' will be cleared out to make way for the next wave of skyscrapers.
